Stress
is any change that you must adjust to. It is persistent in the
environment,
body, and thought. Through Stress Management and the
usage of Biofeedback Therapy,
stress is measured based on three modalities.
Those modalities are (EMG) electomyograph, which
measures stress muscularly, hand
temperature is measured through
peripheral vasoconstriction and skin conductance is
measured through
electrodermal activity. The latter represents cognitive stress.
Traditionally
stress is reduced to a basic psycophysiological
response (fight or flight).
This is a series of biochemical changes
that prepare you to deal with a potential threat. The
response is based on any problem real or imagined causing the cerebral cortex (the thinking
part of the brain) to send an alarm signal to the
hypothlamus (the activator for the stress
response) located in
the mid brain. It then stimulates the sympathetic nervous system
(SNS)
to make a series of changes in your body. Your heart rate, blood
volume and blood pressure
all increase.
Through the application of
Stress Management, with the aid of Biofeedback, clients will be
aware of the of the very subtle changes in physiological states and
be able to bring those
process under conscious control. Stress
Management implements noninvasive techniques
that enhances a
person's ability to cope with stress.
